I'm a utilitarian kind of guy. I can handle dirty, torn coveralls. A cracked, scuffed hockey mask doesn't faze me. Heck, even if I get some pokes and scrapes while on the job, that comes with the territory.
But I absolutely demand the sharpest edges possible when I use a knife or an axe. There's no point (ha!) in doing a slicing or hacking job with a dull blade.

That's why I highly recommend the Fiskars 78616984 Axe and Knife Sharpener. With this useful tool, I can sharpen any blade I pick up in minutes, with an exact 30-degree angle (thanks to the patented ceramic wheel). Plus, the pop-up head (excuse me?) makes cleaning a breeze. It even has a built-in safety guard to protect one's hands.

It's kind of a bummer that the Fiskars 78616984 Axe and Knife Sharpener isn't available for gift-wrapping, because my pals Michael and Freddy would each love one as a surprise.
I never head off to camp without my Fiskars 78616984 Axe and Knife Sharpener!
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7365964331403863208.post-15208139416286547612012-08-23T06:10:00.000-07:002012-08-23T06:10:00.445-07:00A Reasonable Substitute for a WhetstoneReviews: Fiskars 7861 Axe and Knife Sharpener
If one really wants to put a razor sharp edge on an axe or knife, a set of diamond whetstones is the best way to do it. This painstaking manual process requires time and proper technique. Beware: a razor sharp edge is exactly that and not to be trifled with. On the other hand, if "pretty darn sharp" is good enough...and it should be for most utility purposes...a dedicated sharpening tool like the Fiskars will get the job done quickly and with minimum risk to one's fingers. There are a number of similar products on the market. This one comes from a reputable manufacturer at a good price point.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7365964331403863208.post-18718309060397705542012-08-22T06:09:00.000-07:002012-08-22T06:09:00.578-07:00Good Knifes Are Sharp KnifesReviews: Fiskars 7861 Axe and Knife Sharpener
I love this tool because it is easy to use, gets the job done fast, and is small. I've never used it to sharpen an Axe, but I can say that my knifes are now always sharp because it takes zero skill to use. Sharpening a knife is as easy as "cutting" the knife sharpener a few times.

Get this tool, and you will always have a sharp knife.

BTW, the tool is just the right size, maybe 4 inches long (the picture makes it look like this is a big tool). When I got this as a Christmas gift, I was totally surprised because the picture makes it look big.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7365964331403863208.post-90003091898114866432012-08-21T06:08:00.000-07:002012-08-21T06:08:00.397-07:00takes a little workReviews: Fiskars 7861 Axe and Knife Sharpener
You use a back and forth motion to sharpen the hatchet or ax, not a pull through.

I used a very dull hatchet that's used to split kindling wood, mainly 2x4 pieces.

It takes a lot, I mean, a lot of back and forth pulls but, you know what, my little hatchet started to develop an edge and was getting sharp.

I'll get back to it when I need to split more kindling and run the hatchet through a couple of dozen more times.

The more you run your az et al through the sharpener, the more it works for you. No need to worry about shaving off too much metal from a hatchet.

I would not use this sharpened for my kitchen knives, though. But I would use it for a cheap camping or outdoor knife that would get sharp with a crude edge.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7365964331403863208.post-88045925063490721712012-08-20T06:07:00.000-07:002012-08-20T06:07:00.633-07:00Superb sharpener for Fiskar's axeReviews: Fiskars 7861 Axe and Knife Sharpener

This is a very basic but extremely well functioning axe sharpener.

To address one common complaint: Yes, it cuts the plastic to either side of the "cutting" wheel. So what? The plastic will groove over time and it will stop doing that.

When I first took my Fiskar's to it, I had recently completed chopping about 1 cord of hardwood (axe, ironwood, maple). The blade had numerous dents in its edge and was fairly beat up, though still sharp overall.

After about 20 passes (1-2 minutes) back and forth through this sharpener, the edge had no dent and appeared quite sharp. Cut very well.

This may not make the best knife sharpener or be suitable for things with a bigger wedge before the edge, but it's a great sharpener for the fiskars axe!
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7365964331403863208.post-60064367961292037692012-08-19T06:07:00.000-07:002012-08-19T06:07:00.793-07:00Handy, light-weight sharpener for splitter and axeReviews: Fiskars 7861 Axe and Knife Sharpener
I ordered this along with the Fiskars Axe Splitter. After and hour of splitting, I gave the head a few passes back and forth. I got a razor sharp edge on the Axe Splitter, and accidentally cut my knuckle brush brushing up against the edge. It's handy and light. You can put it in a jacket or sweatshirt pocket.

I like the rotating, two wheel construction rather than the "V" bars, on some sharpeners. I have other sharpeners for finer, folding knives and kitchen cutlery, so I save this tool, exclusively for the Axe Splitter.
My only wish, is that the designers might have made the plastic feet on the bottom of the sharpener, a bit larger or even rubber, as it does not grip well on some types of counters. Find the best surface that works for you.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7365964331403863208.post-29036898952433821632012-08-18T06:06:00.000-07:002012-08-18T06:06:00.305-07:00Works Great if the Edge is Shaped CorrectlyReviews: Fiskars 7861 Axe and Knife Sharpener
I have one axe which is fairly new, and hasn't felt the bite of a grindstone. That edge was sharpened to a beautiful point. I have an axe and a hatchet, decades old, which have been struck into the dirt many times and which have spent many minutes on a grinding wheel. This sharpener didn't even touch the point, and only demonstrated how poor an edge I ground out. So, worked beautifully for my Gerber and Fiskers axes.

The grinding wheel inside is just a stone cylinder with a V groove in it, held at an angle to the edge. Run the edge lightly back and forth through the V slot, and it's the rotation of the stone that sharpens little arcs into the edge. This doesn't need any down force. You can distinctly feel the drag when the edge has the same profile as the stone and it's time to stop.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7365964331403863208.post-58221612024098057662012-08-17T06:06:00.000-07:002012-08-17T06:06:00.201-07:00Totally Awesome!!Reviews: FISKARS 40127097 RollSharp Knife Sharpener
I tried the Fiskars axe sharpener on my axes and it worked so well, I decided to try the knife sharpener, too. I wasn't disappointed! I've had a Marttiini knife for 15 years that I've used for everything from whittling to slicing tomatoes, and I'd never sharpened it in all that time because it was still sharper than most -- then I swiped it through the Fiskars knife sharpener ten, twenty times, and now it's razor sharp! I have yet to see how long the super-sharp edge lasts, but I expect it to last a lot of cutting, since the axes I sharpened with the Fiskars axe sharpener stayed razor sharp after a full day of chopping!

My only gripe is that I can't get the entire knife blade into the sharpener -- about a half of an inch by the hilt won't reach the stones, because the hilt gets in the way. But I guess that part of the blade isn't used nearly as often anyway.

I then had to use this sharpener on all my knives, and most of them are now sharper than they were new. The sharpener is dish-washer safe and, though it doesn't say so on the product page, it has a lifetime warranty. I'll never use a dull knife again!
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7365964331403863208.post-42703245430274488292012-08-16T06:05:00.000-07:002012-08-16T06:05:00.112-07:00Simple and EffectiveReviews: Fiskars 7861 Axe and Knife Sharpener
I have used this sharpener recently on a hatchet, Cold Steel Bolo Machete, regular machete, and Cold Steel Javelin spear. The hatchet took some patience, but it managed to put a very sharp edge on the blade after a while. The plastic housing for the sharpening wheels does not allow a curved edge to be sharpened easily, but with a little work, the blade is now sharp.

Where it really came into its usefulness was sharpening the spear and regular machete. It works best while drawing a long, flat blade horizontally across the sharpening wheels. I had a sharp spear in no time, without using a file. It makes a perfect bevel along the blade and negates the use of a file, thus saving metal on the blade.

This is a great tool for a very reasonable price. At that price, buy a few and keep one in reserve.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7365964331403863208.post-26760038610888395692012-08-15T06:03:00.003-07:002012-08-15T06:03:24.640-07:00Helps to restore an edgeReviews: FISKARS 40127097 RollSharp Knife Sharpener
The Fiskars "roll sharp" is very inexpensive and well made given the plastics used in its constructions. My unit is Made in Finland as many Fiskars products use to be before they opened their Chinese factories.

I think I prefer tools that you run over an upside down knife (Accusharp, Norton) rather than push into the sharpener. One exception to this view would be the Chef's Choice motorized sharpeners. However, the Accusharp creates a 20 deg. edge which is problematic for Japanese cutlery.

I bought this sharpener for a Mac knife with 15 deg edge because it was recommended by the mfgr. I tested it on a well used knife and while it restored the edge after several strokes through the ceramic wheels, the edge is still far too rough as seen through an eye loupe. A polishing step is definitely required afterwards and I think it should have a 2nd set of smoother ceramic wheels.

A knife run through this sharpener will cut through newsprint but there is still some hesitation compared to factory sharp which simply slices through with complete ease.

A very light touch will probably just hone the edge restoring the cutting performance after so many uses against the cutting surface.

I'm not confident that running a brand new razor sharp Mac knife (MSK-65) through this Fiskars sharpener won't dull it somewhat as the ceramic wheels are partially serrated.
Everywhere i went to get my axes sharpened, they were telling me that it takes about a week to send them out for sharpening! I could not be without an axe that long, and can you imagine taking the axe in, waiting the week or so and then going back to get it, just so i could finish chopping a tree?

Now when my axes get less than sharp, i run them back and forth in this sharpener or move the sharpener over the blade a few times, which can be a little awkward due to the narrow width of the plastic opening to the sharpening stones, but they get plenty sharp for the job. It is also a knife sharpener which is handy.
Fiskars generally makes good products and i am very happy with this sharpener!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0
